The Praetorian Guard - Inspiration

Many of you have seen the movie Zulu or Zulu Dawn, and its very very obvious that the Praetorian Guard of 40K are drawn from that aspect of history. Heck even when they where first featured many years ago they starred in the battle of Big Toof River they where massacred due to poor leadership and the under estimate of the local Ork forces. Much like the battle of Battle of Isandlwana.

So lets take a look at the original battles staring the Praetorian guard.

Militarum Tempestus - An Exciting Release

Wow. I love these guys. GW really did a good job giving them a mix of archaic and modern appearance. For the first time I am very excited about  GW release.

I just Pre Ordered a squad (10 Men) of these and 1 Taurox. Instead of paying the huge price for the Codex I got the White Dwarf that contains enough rules to field it as part of an Imperial Guard army. So they will replace my Scotsmen as stand in Storm Troopers. After all nobody wants to picture their kilts as they drop out of the sky. I wouldnt put any enemy through that sight...

Campaign Part 2 - Results

“General, soldiering has one great trap: to be a good soldier you must love the army. To be a good commander, you must be willing to order the death of the thing you love. We do not fear our own death you and I. But there comes a time... We are never quite prepared for so many to die. Oh, we do expect the occasional empty chair. A salute to fallen comrades. But this war goes on and on and the men die and the price gets ever higher. We are prepared to lose some of us, but we are never prepared to lose all of us. And there is the great trap General. When you attack, you must hold nothing back. You must commit yourself totally.”

Yet again defeat. We where so close too. The first parts of the game where going well. But we failed to fully commit our selves and paid dearly. So before the report a few things to note:

Due to a current lack of 40k Terrain the battles are being fought on the lush outskirts until I can amass 40k terrain (probably have to bring my own to the club).

The battle was 800 points a side over all. A great game but it did show some horrible flaws in the Chaos Codex and Eldar one, I will elaborate later. Here comes the report:

Campaign Part 2 - Prelude (and a bit more)

The second battle will take place in a few hours as the desperate struggle for the city continues. We have had a few delays but now its back on and things are beginning to escalate. We have 2 more battles to try keep up our offensive or we will be pushed back.

Last battle we where surprised to find the Eldar had decided to join the fight and we paid dearly for it. But this time the heavy guns are coming in and we have a few nasty tricks up our sleeve.

I love this picture.

Imperial Knights - A Patient Look

Heaps to talk about gaming wise lately. But Imperial Knights have cooled down a bit since its arrival onto the board. So time to give my input on the Imperial Knights.

The Blame Game and 40K

I am a little bit late to the party but I think its important for opinions like this to be voiced.

After numerous "talks" with gamers over the internet and reading The Dice Odyssey post here and Cadias Creed Post here on pricing (mainly) of GW products currently it pushed me that little bit further to write this.

I have been grinding my teeth reading complaint after complaint in regards to 40K. Its annoying. A lot of what they complain about does not translate well in the real world. So here is my thoughts on those who complain excessively. And there are many unfortunately.

Imperial Guard Morale Hopes for 6th Edition

The Imperial Guard are unique in how they deal with leadership. Most armies ignore it and many have a high tolerance for battle. However the Guard being predominantly human means there are many things (and with good reason) put fear into our soldiers. Luckily for us many humans have the charisma to instill hope in the soldiers, these generally make up the officers and command of the Imperial Guard and will be found on the front lines reminding the men of their goals and bringing out the motivation to fight and die. But its not just the officers, no the men have plenty of other organisations dedicated to keeping up their moral and discipline. Commissars, Priests, and some times inquisitors can be pivotal to keeping your army functioning.

The Humble Lasgun

I have been thinking today about the Lasgun. Often it is considered near useless. Frequently refereed to as a flashlight. There are probably more terms but you get the picture. So I just wanted to do a little post on the humble Lasgun and bring out the points that make this gun legendary and hopefully properly recognized. So why is the Lasgun so good? Lets see...

Little 40K Rant in Regards to Flames of War...

Tonight I played a game of Flames of War. As usual it was a tight game where nobody knew who was gonna win to the very end. In fact odds where I should have lost! But I managed to cling to victory against the odds. But it got me thinking how much fun the game is ALL THE TIME. Of course its subjective but the rules themselves are very very well done. They are balanced and simple but still have heaps of room for strategy and complex maneuvers.

What does this have to do with 40K?

The Mercenaries - Kroot and Squats

The Scrunt

So my first ever kickstarter has been complete. The Squats (or scrunts). These men will be among the Mercenary Division who will do things my men are not capable of. So these guys are pretty basic to assemble, it took about 40 minutes to do them. I ordered pith helmets with mine and used the standard cap as the squad leader. Sorry about the photos but its getting Dark here and ill be working all week so sunlight photos are a distant hope... But I hope you like them. They are almost as tall as normal men but they really have that stocky short look t them.

Imperial Guard 2014 Turnaround!

Some new images have come up for the codex release. Boy they look good. Here is what I hope to make my squad look like:

Welcome to the Jungle! - Mad Robot Minis

"This is my rifle. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before The Emperor I swear this creed: my rifle and myself are defenders of the Imperium, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen."

Warhammer 40k - Breaking the Addiction.

So we all are guilty of buying models when we perhaps dont need to. Or purchased a model based on looks and no other reason. But this post here is a warning to those just starting out in warhammer (or any game system).

DONT BUY TOO MANY!

Here is why:

3 Ways to enhance your gaming experience!

So despite what the title looks like this isnt a cheesy "improve your body in 3 easy steps!" add :P. No this is something a bit different. Now I used to power game for a long time. Taking highly optimized lists, showing no mercy and winning game after game (mostly). But after a while I felt like I was missing the point of the game. I couldnt keep blaming the rules or the players. They where just trying to have fun. So I started to realize that I need to work on my attitude and way of playing to improve the game for everyone involved. Its working too, a lot of players have built up "fluffy" armies (which will all be featured in the campaign) and we are starting to have more fun with the game. the community is better off as a result.

So have a read below, it may seem obvious but what separates war gaming from a video game in my opinion, comes down to the amount of thought needed. A video game is easy, start it up, master the AI and bam you will win most games. A wargame however takes effort, you need models, terrain, time and players with the same thing. This effort doesnt end, you need to have effort in every stage of the game. This effort should make it fun, so before I make effort into a fourth point and have to change my title lets continue.

As a note, this applies greatly to 40k, but other game systems need it too.

The Holy Inquisition - Lots of Pics

My inquisition allies are under way. I plan on using the Grey knight codex and Inquisition Codex to do this. I have so far got 1 war band and inquisitor and 5 grey knight terminators. Oh and an ex Chaos Rhino but shhhhh.
