WW1 Imperial Guard Army - WIP

Given its been 100 years since the start of the Great War and the recent discovery of some great looking models I thought it would be a great time to start my next themed force. This army will be based off the French at Verdun with a Sci Fi twist added. So here is my inspiration and plan:

Verdun was a bloody battle with attrition as the main goal of the offensive. French soldiers are told that they ARE EXPECTED to die against the Germans! They lived among the dead and mud, suffering huge losses as they clashed with the Germans who also suffered irreplaceable losses during the offensive. The French forces had been made up of the young and old as the flow of soldiers began to slow down.

So I decided to use Anvil Industries Border World Rangers as the infantry. These guys are perfect for the job with their coats, helmet and more importantly the rifle! These will be the farmers, craftsmen, old, young and other men unprepared for the horrors of war. Their rifles will be supplemented with Flame Throwers to clear trenches and bunkers. These men have little moral, no hope and no training. These men will join the masses of the dead to keep the Emperors empire alive.

Now for the Sci Fi bit, these guys will have Chimeras with front ramps taking them to the front lines. The vehicles have front ramps to ensure the soldiers cannot hesitate and are released straight into the action. Each vehicle will have a twin Heavy Bolter Turret to suppress enemy targets and ensure that enough men have a chance to make it to their targets. I have started working on a concept for these seen below.

The images are just a concept, hence the cardboard haha. The front ramp will have some modifications to make sure it looks more like the front. At the moment it looks just like a box on tracks! What has been done is the track sections are reversed, the turret has the dual bolter armament and soon the vehicle will be modified to look more natural.

Then someone has to be there to make sure these men dont flee from combat. So one scout sentinel will be made to cut down any who think they can flee the battle.

The terrain will be thick wet mud. The vehicles will be muddy and so forth. I have found a fair few mud kits and haven't decided on one in particular yet, but they all give a similar look.

The army list is seen below at exactly 1000 Points:

All in all 55 men, 7 Transports and 1 Sentinel. Just wanted to share my idea and hopefully they are fun to play on the field. Any ideas or input will be taken into consideration. For now I'll just work on finishing the Chimera so that my idea can actually work.

    1. Thanks mate. Its all dependent on making the perfect chimera. The issue so far is finding the best way to make it look like the hatch is actually the front! Once that is done the army will be easy to finish off. Ill be sure to update the project every few weeks!

    2. I have an idea of how to fix it: Why don't you have a small box in the back with slits and such at the rear, and have some kind of periscope that goes above the turret, maybe have it off to the right of it or something?

    3. Thats a good idea, makes the back look more backy. Ill try raise the back on my test model tonight!

    Jayden,

I have been toying with using Puppet wars "Ursus tractor" to make a scratch built Gorgon assault transport, that or a Minotour since I have two extra Basilisk gun tubes. Maybe it might work for you.

    1. Looks like it could make some things easier. I'll have a better look tonight and see what bits they have for the hull etc and see where that goes too.

      Cheers mate.
